The 70th Week of Daniel 9 "Seventy Sevens" Many believe that the Jews are still God's chosen people and that the
fulfillment of a glorious Israel spoken of in Isaiah and Jeremiah are
still yet to be fulfilled during the 70th week of Daniel.
They believe the 70 weeks of Daniel are separated into 69 weeks and the
70th week is yet be fulfilled in the future. They believe the
Jews living in the end time will play out this last week (7 years) as
God's chosen people. This doctrine when closely examined will not stand
under the study of what the Bible says. 70 "7's"
The year is 538 BC and Daniel is in prayer for he knew that the 70
years of the captivity ( Daniel 9:2) of his people was almost
over and he wanted to know what God was going to do with Israel. Read
Daniel's prayer in verses 1- 20 of Daniel 9. The angel Gabriel
appears to Daniel to give him an understanding of God's plans for the
people of Israel. The word weeks in Hebrew is Shabuim and means "sevens". As
used in these texts it is referring to weeks of years. 24 "Seventy weeks (weeks of years, 490 years) have been
decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression,
to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in
everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint
the most holy place. God was going to give them one last chance to
be what He wanted them to be and to do what He wanted them to do. He
wanted His people to repent of their sins and accept the Messiah. They
were to carry the gospel to the world. 25 So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a
decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the prince there
will be seven weeks (49 years) and sixty-two weeks ( 69
weeks or 483 years) it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in
times of distress. 26 Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and
have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy
the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to
the end there will be war; desolation's are determined. 27 And he will make a firm covenant with many for one week (7
years), but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice
and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who
makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is
decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate." The 70 weeks stand as one unit The 70 weeks of Daniel stand alone as one unit. It cannot be separated as many do for Jesus Himself confirmed the beginning of the 70th week in 27 AD and He also confirmed the middle of the week by dying 3 ½ years later in AD 30. From the decree to rebuild Jerusalem in 457 BC until the appearing of Messiah is 483 years, which is 27 AD. Christ appeared right on time and was baptized by John the Baptist in 27 AD and began His ministry which lasted for 3 years. In the first segment of 7 weeks (49 years) of our prophecy we see the
temple rebuilt and reconsecrated in 408 BC. 457 - 49 = 408 The first
temple built by Solomon took only 7 years to be built, but the second
Zerubbabel's temple took 46 years plus 3 years to assemble and prepare
for the building of the temple. It was built in very troubled times. Then in the middle of the 70th week in 30 AD Christ was
crucified in the spring of the year, putting an end to the sacrifices,
murdered by His own people. He was the final sacrifice. He was crucified
at Passover and as the priest in the temple of Jerusalem was about to
slay the Passover lamb, Jesus was hanging on the cross. In the darkness
that came the lamb ran away. There was no longer a need to sacrifice the
lamb as the LAMB OF GOD was the final sacrifice, He paid it all. An
angel came to the temple and tore the four inch woolen curtain into. For
the first time all could see into the Most Holy place. The Glory of God
was no longer there, nothing but darkness. Did Jesus confirm the covenant? ….for this is My blood of the
covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. Matthew
26:28 ….how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After
it was confirmed to us by those who heard. Hebrew 2:3 God knew at the end of the 490 years of probationary time that Israel
would reject Him still, and He said that wars and evil would continue
until Jerusalem would be destroyed again and the temple was destroyed in
AD 70. Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! Matthew
23:37 Rome destroyed Jerusalem in AD 70. A Roman soldier threw a
firebrand into the temple and it burned. The temple gold melted in
between the stones and they took each stone apart getting to the gold. …not
one stone here shall be left upon another. Matthew 24:2 If we separate the seventy weeks into 2 units we completely do away with the crucifixion and the putting a stop to the sacrifices. The 70 weeks are one unit, not a time yet in the future.
THE QUESTION OF WHICH DECREE? God did not tell Daniel which decree to start counting from. There were actually 4 decrees. 536 BC by Cyrus Ezra 1, 519 BC by Darius, and two by Artaxerxes in 457 BC and 445 BC in Ezra 7 and Nehemiah 2. Four hundred and eighty three years after one of these decrees we should see the appearing of the Messiah. My own Bible declares in the margin 445 BC (Nehemiah 1:1- 2:8) to be
the year of the decree to rebuild and restore Jerusalem that was issued
by King Artaxerxes of Medo-Persia. This date is not historically
possible because AD 40 is too late for the appearing of Messiah. 483
years after 536 is 53 BC being too early. 519 BC is 36 BC which is too
early. 483 after the decree in 457 BC (Ezra 7) that was issued by
Artaxerxes, we see Christ arrives right on time in 27 AD exactly 483
years from the decree. Luke records who was ruler in the beginning year of
Christ's ministry. Luke 3:1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene. 21 Now it came about when all the people were baptized, that Jesus also was baptized, and While He was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "Thou art My beloved Son, in Thee I am well-pleased." 23 And when He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty
years of age, being supposedly the son of Joseph, the son of Eli. Christ was baptized at 30 years of age and anointed by the Holy
Spirit. The year was 27AD, 483 years from the decree in 457 BC. The end of the 70th week ended in AD 33. God gave Israel
70 "7's" probationary time, the measure of forgiveness. ….
"Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him?
Up to seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you ,
up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven." Matthew 18:21-22
We are to forgive just as God forgave Israel but God's mercy was
over. They had been given 70 times 7. Another confirming point. The wisemen studied Daniel's writings and knew that a priest in
Israel had to 30 years of age before beginning his ministry. They
calculated the time when the 483 years would end and subtracted 30 years
to determine the year of Jesus' birth. Their journey took approximately
2 years. There is no other prophecy other than Daniel 9 in the Bible
that tells us when Christ was born. They did not go without believing
they would see the birth of Jesus. Would you be as excited today that
you would have made this long journey? This also confirms that 457 BC is
the correct decree. The promised destruction Even though an end to the sacrifices for sins was accomplished at the
cross, the Jews continued their observances until the promised
destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. Are the Jews still God's chosen people. God's covenant was conditional with Israel, "If" you will
be my people I will be your God." Read Deuteronomy 7 and 9.
They failed, they rejected Him and they crucified Him. Jesus knew before
his death that the Jews would reject the covenant. 'If they do not
listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if
someone rises from the dead.' Luke 16:3 Jesus was speaking of
Himself. Not only were the Jews God's chosen people but they were
also the trustees of the Gospel. They were to carry the Gospel to the
world. After they failed at the end of the probationary period in 34 AD
God raised up the Christians as the new trustees. One of the most significant events during the last year of Israel's
probationary time was the stoning of Stephen. The Sanhedrin sentenced
him to death for preaching that Jesus had been raised from the dead. The
Jews persecuted all Christians. (Acts 7) Stephen became the first
Christian martyr. One of the things that demonstrates the termination of the Jews being the trustees of the gospel was that Peter was given a vision about unclean animals in 34 AD. But Peter said, "By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean." And again a voice came to him a second time, "What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy." Acts 10:14-15 And while Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, three men are looking for you "But arise, go downstairs, and accompany them without misgivings; for I have sent them Myself." Acts 10:19-20 Peter had been invited to a Roman centurions home. Cornelius was a Gentile and they were regarded as unclean and it was considered by the Jews to be unlawful. Cornelius wanted to hear the gospel. When Peter arrived the Holy Spirit told him to go. When he arrived at the home of Cornelius, Peter said, "You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean. That is why I came without even raising any objection when I was sent for. And so I ask for what reason you have sent for me. Acts 10: 28-29 Peter now understood the vision. The commission of the gospel was now to belong to the Christians instead of the Jews. Read Acts 10, Matthew 28 and Acts 15. We also see during this time God take a Jew and make a Christian out
of him. Saul after his conversion became Paul, who had persecuted the
Christians. But the Lord said to him, "Go for he is a chosen
instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and
the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for My
name's sake." Acts 9: 15-16 Paul understood that God that God had rejected the Jews as His trustees and he told the Romans, "For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly; neither is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God. Romans 2:28-29 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for your are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. Galatians 3:28-29 Paul knew that Israel had been cut off from the covenant of God and
he said, And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief,
will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again. Romans 11:23 By observing Israel even now we can see what happens to people when
they reject their Savior and His covenant. But we have a wonderful promise in Revelation 21:7 He who
overcomes shall inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will
by My son. There is no "if", we will be with Him for
eternity! Every specification has been met in this prophecy. HISTORY AGAIN CONFIRMS PROPHECY FULFILLED !
