The Antichrist

There have been many books written on the identity of the Antichrist, but the Bible is very to his identity. The word antichrist is only used in the books of 1st and 2nd John.

2Jo 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

1Jo 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

1Jo 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

1Jo 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Easton's Bible Dictionary

Antichrist against Christ, or an opposition Christ, a rival Christ. The word is used only by the apostle John. Referring to false teachers, he says (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 1:7), "Even now are there many antichrists."

(1.) This name has been applied to the "little horn" of the "king of fierce countenance" (Dan. 7:24, 25; 8:23-25).

(2.) It has been applied also to the "false Christs" spoken of by our Lord (Matt. 24:5, 23, 24).

(3.) To the "man of sin" described by Paul (2 Thess. 2:3, 4, 8-10).

(4.) And to the "beast from the sea" (Rev. 13:1; 17:1-18).

He has many names.  Some are:

Abaddon (Revelation 9:11)

Apollyon (Revelation 9:11)

Beelzebub (Matthew 10:25; Matthew 12:24, 27; Mark 3:22; Luke 11:15, 18-19)

The serpent (Genesis 3:1-2, 4, 13-14; 2Corinthians 11:3; Revelation 12:9, 14-15)

son of the dawn (Isaiah 14:12)

morning star (Isaiah 14:12)

the evil one (Matthew 5:37; Matthew 6:13; Matthew 13:19, 38; John 17:15; Ephesians6:16; 2 Thessalonians 3:3; 1 John 2:13-14;

1 John 3:12; 1 John 5:18-19)

murderer (John 8:44)

the lawless one (2 Thessalonians 2:8-9)

Ancient serpent (Revelation 12:9; Revelation 20:2)

the great dragon (Revelation 12:9)

angel of the Abyss (Revelation 9:11)

the god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4)

the prince of demons (Matthew 9:34; Matthew 12:24; Mark 3:22; Luke 11:15)

the prince of this world (John 12:31; John 14:30; John 16:11)

the ruler of the kingdom of the air (Ephesians 2:2)

the accuser of our brothers (Revelation 12:10)

the enemy (Matthew 13:39; Luke 10:19; 1 Timothy 5:14)

the father of lies (John 8:44)

the tempter (Matthew 4:3; 1 Thessalonians 3:5)

the thief (John 10:10)

The man of sin is the Antichrist.

2Th 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, 2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Notice that the gathering of the saints does not come before the man of sin (The Antichrist) is revealed.

The book of Revelation gives his identity and the timing of his coming.

Rev 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

Rev 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

Rev 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts (evil angels) upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of theearth have power.

Rev 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads

Notice that these evil angels can not harm the people of God.

Rev 9:5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

Why are they only allowed to torment the wicked? So they will blame the prophets of God and the people of God.

Rev 9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

Rev 9:7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.

The language used is analogous or a comparison. The locust looked like horses but they are not horses. They don't symbolize horses either or the Bible would give scripture that would clearly define the meaning of horses.  John is describing what he saw with an analogy of a swarm of locusts. What John saw is actually a swarm of evil angels coming out of the Abyss. These angels are prepared for battle much like the warhorses of John's day, and their commanding angel of the Abyss leads them much like a swarm of locusts arrives to destroy crops.  John says the name of this commanding angel means destruction. This text has many of the same analogous language described in Joel 2. Read Joel 2. Notice the parallel in the use of this language.  Joel talks of the 2nd Coming of Jesus and His angels while John describes the arriving of Satan and his angels.

Rev 9:8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.

Rev 9:9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.

Rev 9:10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.  Notice these are not locusts, they were like locusts prepared for battle.

Rev 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon

Satan and his evil angels are allowed out of the bottomless pit or the abyss (spirit world).

Strongs Concordance

Abaddon destruction, the Hebrew name (equivalent to the Greek Apollyon, i.e., destroyer) of "the angel of the bottomless pit" (Rev.9:11).

Apollyon destroyer, the name given to the king of the hosts represented by the locusts (Rev. 9:11).  It is the Greek translation of the Hebrew Abaddon (q.v.).

Bottomless pit 12 abussos {ab'-us-sos}from 1 (as a negative particle) and a variation of 1037; TDNT - 1:9,2; n f AV - bottomless pit 5, deep 2, bottomless 2; 9 1)bottomless 2) unbounded 3) the abyss 3a) the pit 3b) the immeasurable depth 3c) of Orcus, a very deep gulf or chasm in the lowest parts of the earth used as the common receptacle of the dead and especially as the abode of demons

Satan has been confined to the spirit world.

Jud 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

He is angry because he knows his time is short.

Rev 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

Rev 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

Rev 17:7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

Rev 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was ( visible), and is not (visible); and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was (visible), and is not (visible), and yet is.

Rev 17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

Rev 17:10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.

Rev 17:11 And the beast that was (visible), and is not (visible), even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

Rev 17:12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

One hour. This does not mean 60 minutes. In the Greek there are 3 kinds of time. A type of time, a duration of time and a genitive of time. Just as we would say, “This is the hour of decision.” This does not mean 60 minutes, but meaning a short time.

He is called the eighth king because he will set himself up over the seven heads (one world religion) and claim to be God. The earth will be divided into 10 sections and a ruler (king) installed over each one.

Satan was an angel named Lucifer

Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Eze 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world:he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Can Satan be a man?

Satan copies everything that Jesus does. Jesus came to the earth as a man, flesh and blood just like us. Jesus came to save the world and Satan will come to destroy.

Isa 14:16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

Eze 28:2 Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God: (All spiritual pride is of the devil.)

2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming:

2Th 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan (Satan's' apparition) with all power and signs and lying wonders,

2Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Satan is an angel who is now confined to the spiritual world. But the time is coming when God will allow him to take on human form, a theopony. He is the Lamb-like beast of Revelation.

Rev 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon

This is the only beast in either Daniel or Revelation that does not rise out of the sea. The sea represents people, multitudes and nations and languages. He comes up out of the earthRemember he was cast into the earth. (Rev 12:9)

Rev 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live

Satan in his human form will even call fire down from heaven so that he might deceive people. He will claim to be God.

The true lamb, Jesus has seven horns.

Rev 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

Rev 19:20 And the beast (the dragon-like) was taken, and with him the false prophet (the lamblike beast) that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image.

These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. Satan is not destroyed at this time, only the body he has assumed.  The dragon-like beast is not the dragon. This beast is made up of kingdoms represented by the lion, bear, leopard and the terrible beast found in Daniel 7. In Daniel 7:12 "As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but an extension of life was granted to them for an appointed period of time. In other words their descendants remain. This is a confederation of global powers, which makes up Babylon.  The body that Satan assumes is also called the false prophet that will be destroyed at the 2nd Coming. Satan will be returned to the Abyss, the spirit world for 1,000 years. Rev 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. At the end of the 1,000 years Jesus and the Holy City with the saints inside will return to the earth. Satan will be loosed and will incite the many resurrected wicked to capture the Holy City. The seventh seal will be opened from the book of life and all will see that all the charges that the devil made against God are not true. Jesus will then destroy the devil and all the wicked. At this time everyone who ever lived will be alive at the same time. What a scene!

Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Mal 4:1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. 3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

We do not know the name that Christ will use upon His return. The devil would probably use it if it were known

Rev 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He HimselfThe Bible does not tell us the name Satan will use. We only know that it is a man's name and it is associated with the number 666.

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Many will accept the mark in order to survive. If you have not learned to live by faith now how will you stand then when we will not be able to buy or sell to survive? Only complete faith in Christ will see you through this time

When Satan physically appears he will be a glorious being.

Every time we see an illustration of the devil we see something ugly and evil. But Satan will come with beauty and everything to draw you to himself. Remember he was an angel of great beauty.

2Co 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

It would not surprise me if he came looking like the description in Revelation of Jesus.

Rev 1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.  14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; 15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.

He will perform miracles

Rev 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

Do not be deceived, Satan will do all kinds of miracles. He is the great deceiver. He will heal the sick and even call fire down from heaven. He will look like a lamb but he will speak like the dragon.  Many will accept him as the Christ. It would also not surprise me if he removed some people to support the secret rapture theory. He will appear here and there claiming to be God. Remember that Jesus never touches the earth when He returns, the saints will meet Him in the air!

Mar 13:22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.

Heavenly Father help us to study your Word so we will not be deceived. Help us to learn to live by faith so we will trust You when all that we have depended upon on this earth is shattered. Only You can see us through this time. May we be watching and waiting anxiously for Your return. We thank You for Your great love for us and Your protection. We thank You for Your Word to give us warning. We give You all honor and praise. Amen
