The 24 Elders in Revelation

The Bible mentions the twenty four elders 12 times in the book of Revelation, but it does not tell us who they are. Yet there is some information to their identity.

And around the throne were twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white garments, and golden crowns on their heads. Revelation 4:4 The term elder means one of greater experience or one who has gone before.

Notice first that they are sitting on thrones and they are wearing crowns. The crowns they are wearing in the Greek is the stephanos, crown, which is the crown of victory. These crowns are not perishable as the garland wreath was to the winners of the Greek games for the crown of victory.

These are not angels. And when He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, having each on a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying "Worthy art Thou to take the book , and to break its seals; for Thou wast slain, and didst purchase for God with Thy blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. Revelation 5:8-9 This verses indicate the twenty-four elders were redeemed by the blood of Jesus. These are possibly representatives of the people of earth. They have been victorious. Who better to observe the mercy of Jesus as He judges the people of earth. In chapters 4 & 5 of Revelation we see Christ is inaugurated as our high priest in heaven shortly before the beginning of the judgment of the dead. The living at the time of Christ' return will judge themselves as to whether they take the mark of the beast. Those who have trouble with a pre-advent judgment must realize that a judgment must take place before anyone is taken to heaven or hell.

The Bible tells us that both Enoch and Elijah were taken to heaven without seeing death. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God. Hebrews 11:5 Then it came about as they were going along and talking, that behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven. 2 Kings 2:11

Moses was resurrected and taken to heaven. (Jude 9) This is confirmed by both he and Elijah's appearance at the transfiguration.
And six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and brought them up to a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Matthew 17:1-3

And still possibly some others were taken. .And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook; and the rocks were split, and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. Matthew 27:51-52

Therefore it says, When he ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, and He have gifts to men." Ephesians 4:8 (captivity of the grave)

We can only speculate as to who the 24 elders are. But rest assured, this too will be revealed to us. PRAISE GOD !
