Warning - Explosive Material!
What
was the power for? Is it promised just so we can work miracles or create
sensational events? The apostle John wrote "But as many as received
Him (Christ) to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to
them that believe on His name." (John 1:12) Power to live like
Jesus, perfectly keeping God's law! Power to abide with God in LOVE!
(John 14 15-21) POWER TO KEEP THE LAW? Jesus
said, "Think not that I am come to destroy, but to fulfill.
(Matthew 5:7) We
can see from this text that the word "fulfill" (Strong's
#4137) cannot mean to do away with. In fact it means to fill to the
full! Jesus actually raised the standard from what the Jews believed it to be. Jesus said, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." ( Matthew 5:21, 22. "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment." Read for yourself the ways he redefined the law throughout the chapter. ". . .Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven. . ." (
verses 34 & 35) Most would agree that to do this is beyond our human
power to perform! Have you ever tried to turn hate into love on your
own? This must be what John was talking about - the "power to
become sons of God!" There is a vast difference between loving your
enemy and refraining from killing him! Jesus made plain the truth. We
cannot of ourselves really to keep God's law! THE NEW COVENANT PROMISE Jeremiah
31:31-34 gives God's promise of a new covenant. Verse 33 says, ". .
.I will put my law in their hearts; and will be their God, and they
shall be my people. Ezekiel 36:16-38 speaks of this covenant in greater
detail. Notice all the "I will" statements! Our salvation is
God's job! He will perform it by His spirit! When? When we ask Him! (Vs
37) Pentecost
Redefined Realizing these things lead us to a new understanding of Pentecost. Bible typology helps us here too. It is
commonly understood that the Passover in Egypt was a type of the
crucifiction of Christ but it seems ver few understand what Sinai
represents in the typical sense. When we determine the time recorded in
the Exodus account we are brought to the antitype. Fifty days after the
Passover we find Moses on Mount Sinai receiving the law on stone. Fifty
days after the crucifiction of Christ we find His believers receiving
the New Covenant promise at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit, the Living Law!
this is true life! This is eternal life! How then can we be satisfied with a mere form of godliness but denying the power thereof (trying to be holy on our own)?" (II Timothy 3:5) Marvel and rejoice! Through Christ Jesus the dynamite power of God's perfect love- His righteousness, His life available to us for the asking! Amen!
